Did you know that 80% of people remember what they see, versus only 10% of what they hear and 20% of what they read?*
Social media, especially Facebook, started as a text platform. Let’s not forget the days of posting quotes, sharing life stories and actually using your Facebook status as a way to let people know who you’re hanging out with. Don’t remember? Here are a couple examples....
(Honestly, how embarrassing is this *insert crying face emoji*)
But it didn’t take Facebook long to shift into photo sharing, which is still popular today, but now what do we see most? You called it. Videos.
I know. It’s hard to keep up with the ever changing ways of social media. It seems like you finally figure out the algorithm and then they go and change it again. Leaving you to wonder why your posts are no longer getting the engagement they once did and how in the heck do you catch back up?
But I want to reiterate the very first sentence of this blog,
“80% of people remember what they see…”
This should reassure you that video is NEVER going to go away on social media.
If that’s not convincing enough, here are 3 more reasons why you should start utilizing video when it comes to digital marketing.
1) Sound or no sound, people will stop and watch.
When you’re scrolling through your Facebook feed, how many times will you stop and watch a video even if you never turn the volume on?
I do it…. All. The. Time. Especially with Tasty videos because, food.
And that should be your goal when developing video content.
Your videos should stop your viewers thumbs from scrolling and keep their attention even if they don’t turn the sound on for the first few seconds or at all!
Here’s an example:
(2020 Do Gooders Conference Promo: video created by Jay Evans/Off Color Media)
Did you watch the full thing? Or just the first 15 seconds? Either way, Facebook rewards originally generated video content over photos, over re-shared posts and especially over text only posts.
2) Video gets the best engagement
Facebook themselves have come out and said that video is the way to get higher engagement.
To simply put it, Facebook will reward a post by pushing it higher on your audiences feeds by determining how long people have watched your video before scrolling.*
Facebook encourages users to create original 3 minute videos. Sounds lengthy, but consider building a promo for your business. 3 minutes is nothin’ with all the awesome info that you have to share!!
If your viewers stop and watch just ONE MINUTE of your video, that’s hhuuugggeee for Facebook.
And they’ll reward you with more engagement.
Not necessarily a gazillion comments, likes and shares, but they will push it to the top of peoples feeds, leading more and more people to view your video – in turn – leading more people to click on your page.
If you ask me, that’s the beauty of social media!
3) Creating videos is a budget friendly way to advertise.
Now, don’t think you have to spend a ton of money to develop high level ads and promotional videos.
Creating your own videos is actually easier than it seems and I think you’ll be surprised by how fun it can actually be to get creative with it!
Think of it this way: If you were a person that follows your organization or business on Facebook, what would you want to see?
My favorite videos to watch from businesses are:
1) Behind the Scenes
2) Event lead ups or recap videos
4) New products
That is so much video content you can create!!
And 99% of the video can be shot by using the camera on your phone!

I shot this video with my Iphone 10s and edited it in Adobe Premiere!
Are your ready now to hop on the bandwagon?!
